The Mets defeated the Astros tonight by the score of 2-1. Mike Pelfrey was dominant tonight in a game where the offense did next to nothing.
The Mets got on the board in the Bot of the 1st thanks to some good base running by Luis Castillo. David Wright came to the plate with runners on the corners and 1 out. He hit a little pop fly into CF. CenterFielder Michael Bourn was playing very deep on the play, so former Met Anderson Hernandez playing 2B, had to go into shallow CF to make the play on the fly ball. Castillo on 3rd, saw that Hernandez's back was to home plate so he took off and scored easily to put the Mets up 1-0.
The Mets would add to their 1-0 lead in the Bot of the 4th. Ruben Tejada came to the plate with the bases loaded and drew a BB for an RBI. This made the Mets lead 2-0.
The Astros threatened in the Top of the 9th. The Mets brought on Bobby Parnell for the 9th inning save. After striking out Hunter Pence to lead off the 9th, Carlos Lee would hit a 1B to CF and would advance to 2nd on error by CF Angel Pagan. With the tying run coming up to the plate in left handed hitter Chris Johnson, Jerry Manuel went to the bullpen for Hisanori Takahashi. Johnson though would single to RF advancing Lee to 3B with one out. Jason Michaels would then PH for Brett Wallace and line a single to LF, scoring Lee and putting the tying run on 2nd. That was as close as the Astros would get though as Takahashi bared down and got Angel Sanchez on a pop up and Tommy Manzella to strike out ending the game.
Mike Pelfrey was dominant tonight and has seemed to recapture what he had for the first two months of the season. He scattered 6 Hits over 8 IP. Pelfrey really only got into trouble once all night and was able to work out of it. In his last 3 starts, Pelfrey is now 2-1, with 23 IP and only 4 ER allowed. With tonight's win, Pelfrey matches his career high in wins with 13. He is now 13-7 on the year, with a 3.61 ERA.
The Mets offense did very little tonight. They were only able to muster 3 hits on the night, all singles. The hits came from Luis Castillo, Jeff Francouer, and Ruben Tejada who broke a 1-44 streak.
David Wright drove in his 85th RBI of the year with his SAC Fly in the 1st.
Carlos Beltran stole his 1st base of the season tonight.
Jeff Francouer recorded another OF assist tonight.
The Mets moved back to .500 tonight at 64-64 and will face the Astros in game 2 of their 3 game series tomorrow night. The starting Pitchers will be RHP Brett Myers for the Astros VS LHP Johan Santana of the Mets. Game time is 7:10PM.
