The Florida Marlins defeated the Mets by the score of 5-4 tonight at CitiField.
The Marlins came out swinging the bats tonight against Pat Misch and it paid off. Th first three hitters of the game reached on singles for FLA. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Dan Uggla hit a little chopper to the 3rd base side of the mound that Pat Misch fielded and did a back-handed flip to Josh Thole covering the plate for the force out. Then with 1 out, Mets killer Gaby Sanchez hit a Sac Fly to RF giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead. Misch would be able to fight through the inning and get out of it only giving up 1 run.
In the 2nd Inning the Marlins would get on the board again. Wes Helms would lead-off the inning with a 2B. After Misch retired the next two hitters, Cameron Maybin lined an RBI 1B up the middle giving the Marlins a 2-0 lead.
The Mets would rebound with a run of their own in the Bot of the 2nd thanks to some shotty defense by the Marlins. David Wright led off the inning with a single. Then, starting Pitcher Alex Sanabia would retire Ike Davis and Jeff Francoeur. It looked as if the lead-off single by Wright would go for naught, but then the Mets caught a break. Josh Thole would hit a sinking line-drive to CF. The CenterFielder Cameron Maybin came charging in hoping to have a play on the ball. Maybin however would charge too hard and allow the ball to get by him scoring Wright all the way from first base, putting the Mets on the board and cutting the Marlins lead to 2-1.
The Marlins would get on the board for the 3rd straght inning in the Top of the 3rd. Hanley Ramirez would lead-off the 3rd with a single to RF. He would then steal 2nd and advanced to third when Josh Thole's through went trickling into CF. After Misch got a K of Dan Uggla, Gaby Sanchez would hit another Sac Fly to CF, scoring Ramirez and giving the Marlins a 3-1.
The score would remain 3-1 until the the Top of the 6th, when the Marlins would extend their lead to 4-1. With two outs and nobody on, Wes Helms hit what looked to be a meaningless line-drive single to RF, however Brett Hayes crushed a line-drive of his own high off the LF wall scoring Wes Helms all the way from 1st base.
The Marlins would stretch the lead to 5-1 when Logan Morrison would hit a 1 out triple to RightCenterfield, which would be followed by a Hanley Ramirez RBI Single.
The Mets would finally get some offense going against Alex Sanabia in the Bottom of the 7th. Carlos Beltran lead-off the Inning with a BB. Beltran would be replaced by David Wright at 1st by hitting into a 5-4 FC. Ike Davis then lined a ball to the right CF gap scoring Wright from 1st base while sliding in safely at 3rd for his first triple of the season. On the next pitch Jeff Francouer hit a groundball up the middle for an RBI 1B cutting the lead to 5-3.
The Mets would show some fight in the Bot of the 9th off Marlins Closer Leo Nunez. David Wright led-off the 9th with a Solo HR to dead CF cutting the score to 5-4. The next hitter Ike Davis popped up to 2B for the first out. Jeff Francouer would then 1B up the middle. Josh Thole would follow Francoeur's single with a BB putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Mike Hessman came up to pinch hit for the Pitcher's spot and hit a chopper to SS. Ramirez at short went to 2B for the force, but Hessman beat the return throw putting runners on the corners with 2 out. Nunez would then BB last night's hero Luis Castillo on 4 pitches, loading the bases for Jose Reyes. Reyes however was unable to come through. On an 0-1 count he hit a bouncing ball to Gaby Sanchez at 1B who tossed to Nunez covering for the final out.
Pat Misch was OK tonight. He seemed to settle down as the night went on despite getting the loss. I would expect Misch to get another start.
David Wright's Solo HR in the Bottom of the 9th was his 20th of the season, doubling his total from last year. Wright went 2-4 and had 3 Runs scored.
Jose Reyes is now 0-10 on the homestand after a very hot road trip.
Josh Thole made a tremendous tag on a play at the plate in the Top of the 8th to keep the score at 5-4.
It is starting to show why Mike Hessman is the career HR leader in the Minor Leagues as he just seemed completely over matched at the plate.
This was a huge loss for the Mets as every team ahead of them in the WildCard standings lost. They could have closed the gap between them and the leading Phillies to 6 games, instead, they remain 7 games back and fall behind another team in the WC race as they now trail the Marlins by a 1/2 for 3rd place in the NL East.
The Mets will look to take the rubber match with the Marlins tomorrow night at CitiField. The starting Pitchers will be LHP Jon Niese for the Mets, opposed by Marlins RHP Anibal Sanchez. Game time is 7:10PM.
