The Mets lost to the Diamondbacks today by the score of 14-1. Jon Niese started for the Mets and looked good in his first 3 IP facing the minimum 9 hitters. Then in the 4th the flood gates opened. After retiring Chris Young to start the inning, Kelly Johnson and Justin Upton reached on 1B's. Then Adam LaRoche hit a 3-run HR that landed in the Pepsi Porch to give the D-Backs a 3-0. After the Mets scored in the bottom half of the 4th, the D-Backs came right back and scored 5 more runs in the 5th, the big blow LaRoche's 2nd 3-run HR of the game.
Jon Niese looked great at the start of the game. He retired 8 of the first 9 hitters with relative ease. Then it all just fell apart for him in the 4th, starting with LaRoche's first bomb of the day. Niese would finish with a line of 4 1/3 IP, 7 H, 3 BB 8 Run (6ER), and 2 K.
The offense once again was sleeping on this Sunday afternoon. They put up back to back 1B's in the 1st and then did not record another hit until the 8th.
Mets pitching allowed 4 HR on the day.
Oliver Perez came on for some mop-up duty in the 8th and 9th and was terrible. His final line was 2 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, and 4 ER. The fact that he declines to accept a demotion to the minors is pathetic and embarrasing on his part. The Mets need to cut ties with him and flat out release him. He is taking up a roster spot and has been as selfish as a ball player could be.
On a day where the Mets really needed a win, they went out and played terribly . They cost themselves of moving within 5 1/2 games of the 1st place Braves who lost today. The Mets have not won back to back games since June 22 and 23 VS the Detroit Tigers. The team travels to ATL tomorrow for a 3 game series that will make or break their season. Good luck guys.
