The Mets defeated the Rockies today by the score of 4-0 at CitiField. Johan Santana was absolutely dominant today, going the distance for a complete game shutout, his 2nd of the year.
After Johan mowed down the opposition in the Top of the 1st by striking out the side, the Mets quickly got their offense started. Jose Reyes led off by reaching on an infield 1B. Then while Fernando Martinez was at the plate, Reyes stole 2nd. After a Martinez pop out, Angel Pagan drove Reyes in with an RBI 1B. The next hitter, Ike Davis hit a ground rule 2B to RF, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd. Carlos Beltran would then hit a Sac Fly to CF scoring Pagan for the 2nd run of the inning.
Jason Hammel and Johan Santana would exchange zero's for the next 5 innings. Then in the 7th, the Mets put 2 more runs on the board. With 1 out, Ruben Tejada drew a BB, which was followed by a Johan Santana 1B, putting runners on the corners. Jose Reyes would then drive in Tejada with an RBI 1B, which was followed by a Fernando Martinez Sac Fly, making the score 4-0, and that is how the game ended.
This is why they call Johan Santana an ace. After what was an exhausting and disasterous evening, Johan went out and brought some ease to a team that has been surrounded by nothing but chaos. Santana was flat out brilliant today. He set the tone in the first inning by striking out the side. The only threat by the Rockies came in the 2nd when they put runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs. Santana though would retire the side without a blemish. This was probably his 2nd most impressive start as a Met, just behind his 2-hit shutout on the 2nd to last game of the 2008 season. Santana's final line of his complete game shut out was: 9IP, 115 P, 10 K, 4 H, and 2BB. Santana is now 10-6, with a 2.89 ERA on the year.
A day after the horrible episode that took place involving Francisco Rodriguez, the Mets came out and played one of their best games of the season. Several good signs came from today's game.
Carlos Beltran, who has struggled terribly since his return, reached base 4 times, going 3-3 with a 2B, RBI, and a walk.
Jose Reyes was 2-4, with a R scored, a RBI, and 2 SB.
The Mets were finally able to pad a lead, and get timely hitting with runners in scoring position.
The Mets will go for back to back wins against Philadelphia tomorrow for the first time since late June. A span that stretches 43 games.
Starting pitchers for tomorrow's game VS the Philadelphia Phillies will be RHP R.A. Dickey for the Mets, and LHP Cole Hammels for the Phillies. Game time is 7:10PM.
