The Mets lost to the Astros by the score of 4-3.
The Mets jumped out to an early lead tonight once again. Jose Reyes led-off the game with an infield single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Fernando Martinez, who was in the 2 spot tonight as Angel Pagan got the night off hit a line drive 1B to CF scoring Reyes from 2nd to give the mets the early 1-0.
The lead would disappear rather quickly however. Michael Bourn led off the Bot of the 1st with a single. Angel Sanchez would follow that up with one of his own to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Then the number 3 hitter Hunter Pence would hit a hanging Johan Santana change-up deep over the LF wall for a 3-run HR, giving the Astros a 3-1 lead.
The Mets were able to cut into the Astros lead in the Top of the 2nd. With 1 on and 1 out, Johan Santana bounced a 2B over the third baseman's head to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Jose Reyes would then hit an RBI groundout to SS cutting the Astros lead to 3-2.
Both teams would be held scoreless for the next 5 innings. Finally, in the Top of the 8th, the Mets were able to tie the game. David Wright, who has been in a tremendous slump in the month of August, hit a high drive to LF that cleared the wall for a Solo HR, Wright's 18th of the year, tying the game at 3-3.
The Astros though would respond quickly again. With 1 out Hunter Pence stepped to the plate again. He got a 3-2 slider and deposited it just over the LF wall for a Solo HR, his 2nd HR of the game, giving the Astros the lead again and this time for good at 4-3.
Hunter Pence provided all the offense the Astros would need tonight. He went 2-4 with 2HR and 4 RBI.
Johan Santana was very good once again. He made two bad pitches all night which resulted in the Astros 4 Runs. He threw a Complete Game for the 2nd time in his last 3 starts. Unfortunately this time he got the loss.
David Wright finally broke out of his run production drought by recording his first RBI in the month of August by hitting his 18th HR of the year.
The Mets will continue their series with the Astros tomorrow night at Minute Maid Park. The starting pitchers will be R.A. Dickey for the Mets VS Brett Myers of the Astros. Game time is 8:05PM.
