Post-Game Wrap-Up: Phillies 3 Mets 1

The Mets lost to the Phillies 3-1 Sunday night, losing 2 of 3 in the series, and finish their homestand with a record of 3-3. This game was all about the Phillies speed and execution with runners in scoring position. The Mets were unable to record the big out when needed and the Phillies capitalized in route to the win.

The Phillies scored their first run in the Top of the 3rd. With 2 out and nobody on, Jimmy Rollins singled to LF. Then during the same at-bat to Shane Victorino, Rollins stole 2nd and 3rd. Victorino would then rope a clutch 2-out RBI 2B down the 1st base line scoring Rollins, and give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.

The Mets would quickly respond in the Bottom half of the 3rd. Leading off the inning, Jose Reyes would work a 1-1 count against Kyle Kendrick, and then hit a line drive HR off the RF foul pole to tie the score at 1-1.

The Phillies would regain the lead in the Top of the 5th. This time with 2 out and nobody on, Shane Victorino would line a 1B up the middle. He would then steal 2nd with Placido Polanco at the plate. Polanco would then come through with a 1B up the the middle to put the Phillies back ahead 2-1.

The Phillies would add to their lead in the Top of the 6th when Jayson Werth lined the ball down the RF line. The ball alluded Pagan and rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Werth to slide in safely at 3rd for a leadoff 3B. Carlos Ruiz would then single him home giving the Phillies a 3-1 lead which would end up being the final score.

This game showed exactly why the Phillies are contenders and the Mets are pretenders. The Phillies executed every aspect of the game tonight. They used their speed to steal bases in situations that called for a stolen base, and were able to produce with runners in scoring position. The Mets on the otherhand did not execute at all. They again did not get a single hit with runners in scoring position. After Reyes' leadoff HR in the 3rd inning, they were only able to get one more hit in the game.

Mike Pelfrey was OK tonight. He was effective but was unable to get the key out when he needed to. He aloud the Phillies to get cluch 2 out RBI hits which essentially won them the game. Pelfrey finished with a line of 7IP, 3 ER, 7 Hts, 0BB, and 1K while taking the loss and falling to 11-7 on the season.

The Mets offense was stagnant once again. They were unable to get the big hit they needed.

The Mets will fly to Houston tonight and take on the Astros tomorrow at 8:05PM. The starting pitchers will be LHP Jon Niese for the Mets VS LHP Wandy Rodriguez for the Astros.
