Little Pelf

The Mets lost to the D-Backs last night by the score of 13-2 at Chase Field yesterday.

Mike Pelfrey was awful last night giving up 6 R (all earned) on 7 Hits and 2 BB in just 1 1/3 innings. He was all over the zone unable to control any of his pitches. He left several pitches over the middle of the plate especially on pitchers counts such as 0-2 and 1-2. Something is very wrong with Pelfrey. He looks like a totally different pitcher than he did in his first 15 starts. He has no command and his confidence is no longer there. The pace of his game has dramatically decreased. Dan Warthen and Jerry Manuel have a lot to be concerned about with Mike.

On the offense side the Mets welcomed back their "A" lineup which included Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, and Luis Castillo. Still the Mets were only able to muster 2 Runs. I do not think that this is a concern however. When a team is put in a 6-0 hole before the end of the 2nd inning, it is hard to get the bats going. The good news was that Beltran has looked excellent at the plate with very good balance. He is hitting the ball hard although at people. Jose Reyes in his return last night did not look good in his first 2 at bats, however hit the ball well in his last 3 for 2 hits including a 2 out RBI 2B. Luis Castillo made his return last night from the DL. It was his first game since June 1st. I thought he looked good at the plate as well. He lined a 1B up the middle in his first at bat on a 3-2.

The Mets can throw this game out the door. Like I stated earlier, when you get into a 6-0 hole in the 2nd inning it is hard
get the bats going. For the Mets, the stretch run starts now. They finally have all of their pieces back. They have the lineup that they were expecting out on the field the whole year. They need to make a move now if they plan on making the playoffs. Despite a 1-4 start to the second half of the season, they are still only trailing the Division Leading Braves by 5 1/2 games in the EAST and are only 2 1/2 games behind in the Wild Card with 4 teams ahead of them. The Mets will look to right the ship tonight VS ARI in the second game of the series.
