The New York Mets downed the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 1-0. This was a great pitchers duel. The game featured a pair of left-handers who brought their "A" game tonight. The only run came on a Solo HR by Mets RF Jeff Francoeur.
What a game! This is exactly why Johan Santana gets paid the big money. He was phenomenal tonight. He held the Phillies hit-less for the first 5 2/3 innings. Finally in the Bot of the 6th, Placido Polanco lined a single to break up the no-hit bid. Francisco Rodriguez was very good tonight as well, coming on in the Bot of the 8th to bail out Santana after he allowed the first two hitters to reach base. Rodriguez went 1 2/3 innings on the night and recorded his 24th save on the year. Cole Hamels was equally as impressive as Johan Santana. Hamels was on point all evening long striking out 11 Mets. His only blemish was the Solo HR to Francoeur.
Ruben Tejada, who was re-called from Triple-A before the game tonight, played tremendous defense tonight. He made three plays that Luis Castillo would not have made. This kid can play. If he can produce a little bit at the plate, he will be a Met for a very long time.
Once again Jerry Manuel made a questionable call by having Angel Pagan bunt with Reyes on first and no outs. I don't understand why he has his most productive hitter this year give himself up.
Johan Santana's final line on the night was: 7 2/3 IP, 5 Hits, 3 BB, 6 K. Santana is now 9-6 on the year with a 3.06 ERA.
The Mets conclude their 3 game series with the Phillies tomorrow at 1:10 PM. Starting pitchers will be R.A. Dickey for the Mets VS Roy Halladay for the Phillies.
